The Euler Group meets once or twice a month in person at CU Boulder. The content and structure of the meetings vary. Sometimes a speaker will give a talk on a math-related topic. Speakers have included the Math Circle directors, Math Circle alumni, professors of math or adjacent fields, and current math circle students, who have presented on the research they have conducted. Past Euler Group topics have included cryptography, game theory, dynamical systems, graph theory, and machine learning.
Some meetings also include a chance to practice contest problems. Regardless of whether we work on contest problems or not, most meetings provide opportunities for collaborative problem-solving. Students are encouraged to work with other students to find answers to challenging problems. We then invite students to present their solutions at the board. This helps the presenter to practice explaining mathematics to others, and helps the rest of the group to see how the presenter arrived at the solution; there are often multiple ways to solve a problem, and it’s interesting to see the different ways that people arrive at the same answer.
Who Is It For?
The Euler Group is open to all high school students (grades 9–12). Middle school students who qualified for the state MATHCOUNTS team the previous year may also join; otherwise, we encourage middle schoolers to attend the Galois Group or Afterschool Program meetings.
When & Where
Meetings are held on Sunday afternoons, once or twice a month from August through May, on the CU Boulder campus (usually in the Engineering Center). See the meeting schedule for specific dates, times, and locations.
Registration and Cost
New participants should join our mailing list using the form above, then come to the next meeting. All students attending in-person meetings must complete a signed waiver form before attending.
There is a $30 registration fee for the academic year. You may attend one meeting free of charge, and the fee can be waived for families needing financial assistance — just let us know.
